Thursday, May 9th, 2019

A man needing no introduction, 500 years after his death, Leonardo da Vinci, the Genius, is currently being honoured throughout Italy and the world. Celebrations will highlight this great Master; a painter, sculptor, scientist, engineer, mathematician, inventor, astronomer, architect, musician and writer. Known foremost as a painter, with famous works such as the Mona Lisa, Virgin of the Rocks, and, The Last Supper, there is much to celebrate.

Leonardo da Vinci

Official celebrations commenced on May 2, in Rome, at Palazzo Quirinale, the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic. Sergio Mattarella sounded the bell as a dedication to Leonardo da Vinci. This was the official opening to the Celebrating Leonardo event which will tour cities such as Florence, Milan, Paris, New York, Berlin, Madrid, to name a few.

Celebrations feature exciting aspects of Italian Excellence through Art, gourmet food, fashion, furnishing, design, science, technology and theatre.

In the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, an exciting exhibition of Leonardo’s annotations and drawings from 1504 to 1508 are on display. These works can be viewed interactively through a recently invented multimedia aid. This is befitting in honouring a true innovative Genius.

Leonardo da Vinci

At Palazzo Strozzi, an exhibition is showcasing masterpieces by Verrocchio, the Master of Leonardo, as well as other famous masters like Perugino, Ghirlandaio, and works by Leonardo, himself. Palazzo Vecchio will also display Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus which he worked on whilst in Tuscany.

In Prato, outside of Florence, at the Textile Museum, a special exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci: Genius and Textiles is showing his research into drawings of the mechanization of materials such as silk, yarns and fibres.

In Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo, his first works ever recorded (at the age of 21) are on show. These works are quite fragile, so only on display for a brief period. Exhibitions in Turin, Milan and Venice will also be held throughout the year.

Leonardo da Vinci exhibitions outside of Italy

In the UK, a showcase of Leonardo’s famous drawings “A life in Drawings” including his ‘Invisible Ink’ drawings and ‘Mirror Writing’ drawings will be a major highlight.

Queen Elizabeth II inherited more than five hundred drawings by Leonardo which were purchased by King Charles II. These drawings will be featured in exhibitions in various English Museums. In New York there will be displays of drawings and reproductions of Leonardo’s inventions as well as a Tapestry of the Mona Lisa, a 360 degree replica, the largest ever made.

In France, at Chateau de Clos-Luce, in Amboise where Leonardo died, a tapestry of The Last Supper will be displayed, on loan from the Vatican. Leonardo went to France at the age of 64 in 1516, at this stage he was crippled with pain in his hands and could no longer paint. He died on May 2, 1519 aged 67.

All these exhibitions celebrate Leonardo by showcasing the diversity of this Genius. Money will also be raised to go towards building a pavilion for visitors to walk through 500 years of Leonardo's dreams, a sort of guiding expo showcasing Leonardo's art and inventions.

Tuesday, April 16th, 2019
Matera

Matera, a small ancient city found in southern Italy, in the region of Basilicata, has been chosen as the Cultural Capital of Europe (2019). Believed to be the third-oldest inhabited settlement in the world, today, Matera is enchanting and well worthy of this title.

Rich in history dating as far back as 8,000 years when farmers, shepherds and their animals lived in caves called sassi, meaning stones in Italian. These famous stone caves are now where you will find restaurants, bars, hotels, and souvenir stores.

Matera’s highland plateaus are characterised by deep fault fissures, ravines, rocks and caves. The famous Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera were acknowledged by Unesco for their magnificent “Rupestrian” churches which feature ancient rock paintings dating back centuries.

Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera

In more modern times the people of Matera strive to improve their ancient city, making changes to embrace modern ideas. Their motto as the Cultural Capital of Europe is “Open Future”. An example of this is the new Open Design School established to promote new ideas. The school works towards creating new concepts such as luxury cave accommodation and restaurants to attract new visitors to the city.

So how is Matera celebrating the Cultural Capital of the World recognition?

Matera began its celebrations in January with traditional lighting ceremonies, followed by an grand parade of musicians from all around the world marching through the streets. Many exhibitions, festivals and parties will be held throughout the year to highlight the beauty of this ancient city.

To co-incide with this momentous event Vita Italian Tours will visit this breathtaking ancient city as part of its sold-out September tour, The Spectacular South - Puglia, Abruzzo & Matera. Travellers will have the opportunity to stay in a luxury Cave hotel in Matera and be able to marvel at the cave houses, churches with their ancient rock paintings, as well as many other beautiful attractions, both in the old and new part of town. Bookings are already being taken for the 2020 & 2021 departures.

Pesaro Winter Wonderland. Pesaro, situated in Le Marche Region on the Adriatic Coast of Italy, is getting into the festive spirit transforming the centre of the city into a Christmas winter wonderland. Named Pesaro Nel Cuore, which translates as 'Pesaro in our Hearts', the exhibition features an installation in the main square, Piazza del Popolo', of the most illuminated Christmas tree in the whole of Italy.

Piazza del Popolo Natale Pesaro Winter Wonderland

The tree is a centre piece of the square and shines brightly decorated with 70,000 white LED lights. The ancient buildings surrounding the square such as Palazzo Baviera, the Post Office and Ducal Palace come to life displaying colourful projections of giant snowflakes.

Around the ancient fountain with its tritons, dolphins and seahorses, the Municipality has set up a skating rink where all can enjoy skating, children, teenagers speeding around the rink, parents and grandparents together. Italy kicking goals in brazil Rio de Janeiro, 1 July - Italy kicking goals in Brazil. The Azzurri may not have set the world on fire with their early exit from the World Cup in Brazil but at least Italy is kicking goals in the export market in Brazil.

Some of Italy’s famous Prosciutto, Salami, Pancetta and other pork derived cold cuts have won a new certificate of export health from Brazilian authorities as reported by the Italian industrial association of meat and sausages ASSICA. Northern regions such as Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Le Marche were allowed to export their finest local produce into the strong and growing Brazilian market. This good news come on the back of a momentous decision last June when a long standing 45 year ban was lifted allowing Italian cold cuts to gain access to the lucrative US market.

The ruling is a great win for Italy as exports to Brazil continue to rise having almost doubled in the past five years. The Azzurri may no longer be at the World Cup but it is nice to know that Italy will still be represented in Brazil by some of its famous produce.

Pope Francis Superhero Vatican, 30 April - Is Pope Francis a modern-day superhero? The media-friendly and always smiling and humble Pontiff was named the person of the year ahead of Barack Obama and Edward Snowden by Rolling Stone magazine. Soon after this naming, a local artist depicted him on a mural on a wall near the Vatican City as the modern Superman or white capped crusader, in mid flight with rosary beads around his neck and a black briefcase.

Pope Francis, who has become the people's pope, is inviting record crowds at papal events at the Vatican. He is revered by people around the world for breaking from tradition through his decision to live in a humble flat and his inclusive attitudes to human rights, gay marriage, birth control and abortion. He reaches out to the young, migrants and the poor which has boosted his popularity and his charisma is apparent through searches and comments on social media such as magazines, Google and twitter.

On our Grand Tour, travellers have the experience of visiting St Peters Basilica and square where Pope Francis presents himself to the public on Wednesdays.

Via dei Fori Imperiali II Rome, 20 August – The famous central boulevard around the Colosseum, 'Via dei Fori Imperiali’ is being transformed into a pedestrian and bicycle zone on Saturdays beginning August 3.

The ‘pedestrianisation’ of this famous road that runs between the Roman Forum and the iconic Colosseum will begin on the ‘Notte dei Fori’ (Forum Night), organised to celebrate its rebirth as an urban landscape. Forum night will be marked by performances and concerts throughout the evening.

It is a dream of the current Mayor of Rome Ignazio Marino; himself a keen cyclist, to eventually ban all traffic through the area. Mayor Marino claims that by banning just private vehicles from the road, traffic will be slashed by 90% greatly preventing further damage to the ancient structures caused by pollution and the vibration from traffic congestion.

This area of ancient Rome is a feature in the signature guided Vita Italian Tour, The Grand Tour of Italy. The walk along the ‘Via Dei Fori Imperiali’ will be made easier and more memorable for our travellers if the current mayor gets his wish.

Monday, June 17th, 2013

View on Florence Duomo Florence, 13 June - There is great anticipation in Florence for the publication of Dan Brown’s new book ‘Inferno’. The novel is loosely based on the great Florentine poet Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ since it centres on the piazza and historical buildings of Florence.

Authorities are hoping that the novel will further enhance Florence as the cultural capital of Italy and attract millions of tourists to the city just as ‘Angels and Demons’, one of his previous works, did for the Vatican and Rome.

Members of the Italian Dante Society also welcome the new book, despite its historical inaccuracies, because it will bring the poet’s work to a much wider audience. Florence is a regular stop for travellers on many of Vita Italian Tours.

A crowd of over 150,000 in St Peter’s Square cheered as white smoke billowed from the most widely watched chimney in the world.

As our Vita Italian Tour season is about to begin we are happy that the cardinals are now finished with the Sistine Chapel so that our groups will get a chance to experience Michelangelo’s frescoes when we visit Rome.

Giant Panino Rome Rome, 13 February  - Travellers on The Grand Tour of Italy get the opportunity to visit the Campidoglio or Capitol Hill, Rome’s seat of power for more than 2000 years dating back to the time of Caesar and Emperor Augustus.

Last month surprised travellers and locals alike were greeted by the sight of a giant 'panino' in the middle of the piazza. Strategically positioned in front of the Mayoral office,  the giant sandwich was a symbol of protest over a new, so called ‘anti-panino’ law,  in which you can face a fine of up to €500 for eating on or next to famous landmarks such as the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps.

Similar measures have been introduced in St. Marks Square in Venice. In Florence during the summer tourist period, ropes cordon off the steps around the famous Duomo to avoid people lounging and eating in front of the famous Cathedral. There has been much opposition to the new ban in Rome, however city officials maintain it is a necessary measure in order to ensure citizens and tourists alike respect the beauty of these ancient monuments.

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

Rome, 10 January - Small groups of travellers travelling with Vita Italian Tours to Rome enjoy a guided visit of the Roman Forum including the original starting point of the Cloaca Maxima. The Cloaca Maxima, (Giant Sewer) which burrows beneath the Roman Forum before emptying into the Tiber River, pre dates the Roman Empire. The mile long tunnel was originally dug as a canal by the early inhabitants of Rome to drain the swamp lands where the present Roman Forum stands.

It was maintained throughout the Roman Empire and into the medieval times and was ultimately incorporated into the city's main sewerage system. But decades of inadequate maintenance meant that it is now clogged with debris and silt, raising fears of blockages and collapses. An ambitious operation to clean and maintain the drain, which has been undertaken by the Regional Archaeological Superintendence, is expected to take two years.

Rome, 12 December - In the land of Fiat, Ferrari and Lamborghini fewer people are buying cars than at any time since the 1970’s. More and more Italians are turning to the bicycle. Figures just released reveal that over 1,750,000 bikes were bought in Italy in 2011 compared to 1,748,000 motor vehicles. Of Italy’s 60 million people, 6.5 million ride a bike to work or school and 10.5 million use one occasionally. In the many towns we visit on our personally guided small group tours our travellers experience the local people using their bikes for their daily commuting for shopping, business or catching up with friends in the local piazza.
